April 5
1614  Pocahontas, daughter of the leader of the Powhatan tribe, married English colonist John Rolfe in Virginia.
1858  Washington Atlee Burpee, Canadian horticulturist, was born.
1887  British historian Lord Acton wrote in a letter, "All power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
1916  Gregory Peck, American actor, was born.
1958  Ripple Rock, an underwater threat to navigation in the Seymour Narrows in Canada was destroyed in one of the largest non-nuclear controlled explosions of the time.
1992  Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton died at age 74.
2008  Actor Charlton Heston died at age 84.

1199  King Richard I of England died from an infection following the removal of an arrow from his shoulder.
1453  Mehmed II began his siege of Constantinople (Istanbul), which fell on May 29.
1483  Raphael, Italian painter & architect of the Italian High Renaissance, was born.
1830  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was organized by Joseph Smith in Fayette, N.Y.
1892  Donald Douglas, American aircraft designer & founder of Douglas Aircraft Company, was born.
1896  The first modern Olympic Games opened in Athens, Greece.
1992  Isaac Asimov, Science fiction author, died at age 72.
